METCO

About METCO

The Metropolitan Council for educational Opportunity (METCO) is a state-funded educational program designed to eliminate racial imbalance through the busing of children from Boston and Springfield to public school systems in surrounding suburban communities.

Recent research has shown the METCO program yields great benefits for students. These benefits include higher levels of academic achievement and high school graduation rates that exceed the state average. For an overview of the joint study published by the Pioneer Institute and the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School, click here.

The METCO Program is open to all children of African American, Latino, Asian, and Native American descent, who live in the city of Boston. They make the choice to participate. Enrollment into the program begins at the METCO, Inc. office in Roxbury. Click on Application Process for more information. The Bedford METCO Office does not accept any registration applications.

The Bedford METCO Program is made up of a diverse group of student from broad ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds with a with a range of educational strengths and needs. Bedford tries to maintain an enrollment of 95 students each year within our four schools.

Bedford METCO Office Staff

We have teachers that accept stipend positions for after school programs designed especially to meet the academic needs of our METCO students at the elementary and middle school levels. These people may change from year-to-year.

We also have our regular bus drivers from Bedford Charter Service, tried and true, that bring our students to and from school safely. There is one bus for the Davis and Lane Elementary Schools, one bus for our John Glenn Middle School, and one bus for Bedford High School.
