What is A.L.I.C.E?
ALICE is a dynamic safety protocol that empowers individuals to make choices based on real-time information in an emergency situation to increase safety and reduce casualties.
What does the acronym mean?
A ALERT.
- Use plain and specific language.
- Avoid code words.
- Inform as many people as possible in the danger zone that a potentially life threatening situation exists.
- Convey as much specific information as possible to help individuals make an informed decision.
- Use multiple means of communication: intercom, text, phone, etc.
L LOCKDOWN.
- Barricade the room.
- Silence phones.
- Prepare to EVACUATE or COUNTER if needed.
- Provides time to come up with a plan based on information – options to EVACUATE or COUNTER
I INFORM.
- Communicate the intruder’s location in real time.
- Use any means available to pass on real time information. Text message, Intercom, phone, 911 calls.
- Update often.
- Anyone with information should communicate it
- Plain and clear language
C COUNTER.
- Create noise, movement, distance and distraction.
- Create a dynamic environment (use any objects or items available)
- Distract the intruder
- Goal is to reduce intruders/shooter’s ability to shoot accurately
- Create opportunity to EVACUATE
E EVACUATE.
- When safe to do so, remove yourself from the danger zone.
- Strategic evacuation based on information
- Avoid the intruder if safe to do so
- Leave the building and get as far away as quickly as possible
- Any means of egress – door, window, etc.
